About Hydrometric

It started with a question

Hydrometric began as a series of conversations between two hydrologists: Chris Cameron-Hann and Clare Winter.

After years of working in flood estimation, reviewing studies, comparing approaches and explaining decisions to clients and regulators, we found ourselves asking the same question:

Why are we still working this way?

The hydrological methods we use today are built on decades of excellent research and practice. However, many of the tools and workflows we rely on were developed for a very different technological era. Valuable knowledge gets buried in project archives. Decisions can be difficult to revisit. Lessons learned on one study rarely find their way into the next.

And perhaps most importantly, the wider hydrology community rarely gets the chance to learn from the thousands of assessments being carried out every year.

We believed there had to be a better way.

So we started building one.

More than software

Hydrometric was created because we wanted to make hydrological estimation easier to understand, easier to review and easier to learn from.

Along the way, we realised something much bigger was possible.

What if every hydrology study could contribute, in a safe and anonymous way, to a growing body of knowledge that benefits the whole profession?

What if hydrologists could learn not only from their own projects, but from patterns emerging across thousands of assessments?

Those ideas became the foundation of Hydrometric.

Today, the platform combines transparent calculations, collaborative workflows and established flood estimation methods. But the longer-term vision is much broader: helping create a community-driven evidence base that enables better decisions, better research and better hydrology.

Meet the team

Chris Cameron-Hann

Chris Cameron-Hann

Chris is a hydrologist, hydraulic modeller and software developer with more than twenty years of experience working in flood risk, hydrology, hydrometeorology and flood forecasting.

His work has spanned everything from technical hydrological analysis and flood forecasting to the development of innovative software, data products and decision-support tools. He has worked with organisations around the world to improve understanding of flood risk, strengthen forecasting capability and make better use of hydrological and meteorological information.

Chris brings extensive expertise in hydrology, data and technology, together with a long-standing interest in how better information can lead to better decisions.

Clare Winter

Clare Winter

Clare is a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager with more than twenty years of experience in flood risk, water resources and environmental management in the UK and internationally. Throughout her career she has led and reviewed hydrological studies for major infrastructure projects, reservoirs, flood management schemes and climate resilience programmes, helping organisations make robust decisions in complex and uncertain situations.

Alongside her work in hydrology, Clare is a leadership coach, team coach and mentor. Her experience across both technical and people-focused disciplines has reinforced a belief that better outcomes often emerge through collaboration, constructive challenge and shared learning. Those experiences have shaped Hydrometric’s focus on transparency, collaboration and continual learning.

A community approach to hydrology

One of the things we value most about the hydrology profession is its willingness to share ideas, challenge thinking and learn together.

Hydrometric is built around that spirit.

Our vision is a platform where practitioners can not only undertake hydrological estimation, but also collaborate on projects, review analyses, share knowledge and contribute to a growing understanding of floods, droughts and uncertainty.

No single individual or organisation has all the answers. Together, we can learn faster, spot patterns more easily and build a stronger evidence base than any of us could achieve alone.

Join the community

Hydrometric is still evolving and we’d love you to be part of that journey.

Whether you’re a consultant, researcher, regulator, asset owner, student or simply someone with an interest in hydrology, there are plenty of ways to get involved.
